Stages Of Malignant Mesothelioma
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010
One of the processes that are used to determine the spread of cancer is staging. It determines the spread of cancer and the extent of such spread. Broadly speaking there are five stages of malignant mesothelioma covering stages I to IV and the stage of recurrent cancer.

Another broad classification of the stages of mesotehlioma is localized, advanced, and recurrent. Stage I refers to localized mesothelioma, stages II to IV refers to advanced mesothelioma, and stage V refers to recurrent mesothelioma. Localized means that the disease is yet to spread to lymph nodes whereas advanced means that the disease has reached the lymph nodes already. Recurrent means the cancer that has relapsed after being treated and was thought to be cured.
Physicians conduct various tests to find out whether the cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. Information that is collected from the staging processes determines stages of the disease. One can easily understand the spread of cancer for planning effective mesothelioma treatment.
Some of the tests and procedures used for diagnosing and treatment of mesothelioma are chest x-ray, MRI, and CT scan. Organs and bones that reside inside the chest are checked using the chest x-ray process and projects the results on films creating picture of areas inside the body. CT scan creates a series of detailed photographs of the chest as well as the abdomen that are taken from different angles using the procedure called tomography also known as computerized axial tomography.
Perfect assessment of stages helps determine the mesothelioma life expectancy of the patient.
